Tri-Valley Uber, Lyft Rideshare Discount Program Expands

Press release from Tri-Valley Wheels:

April 29 2020

LIVERMORE, CA– Effective Friday May 1, the Livermore Amador Valley Transit Authority (LAVTA) is expanding its popular Go Dublin program to include the cities of Pleasanton and Livermore. The expanded program, now called Go Tri-Valley, was made possible through a grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District(AQMD).

The expanded Go Tri-Valley program was originally scheduled for implementation in July. However, as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic became more severe, LAVTA decided to start the program earlier. LAVTA Board Chair David Haubert said “Across the country, a number of transit agencies have had to cease operations because of employees either testing positive for COVID-19 or being quarantined due to exposure. We accelerated the launch of Go Tri-Valley in order to put in place a safety net mobility option as we reduce service on the Wheels bus system, or should we be forced to suspend all bus operations due to a lack of employees or by order of a local or state health organization.”

LAVTA introduced Go Dublin as a pilot program in January 2017. The program offers discounted rideshare trips using Transportation Network Companies (TNC) Uber and Lyft. The Go Dublin program pays 50 percent of the cost of an UberPool or Lyft Line trip that begins and ends within the city limits of Dublin, up to a maximum of $5.00. The program has been very successful and now carries approximately 1,500 rides per month.

Last year, LAVTA received a two-year grant from the AQMD to expand the Go Dublin program to include Pleasanton and Livermore. This new Go Tri-Valley program will follow the same subsidy model as Go Dublin, but will also permit trips between cities in LAVTA’s service area. The program provides an opportunity for shared ride travel to and from many areas that are currently unserved by LAVTA regular fixed routes.

Because of social distancing concerns, Uber and Lyft have temporarily suspended their UberPool and Lyft Line shared ride services. As a result, the Go Tri-Valley subsidy will initially be available on UberX and Lyft services until such time as the shared ride options resume operation. Uber also has wheelchair accessible vehicles available through the Uber WAV program, which also qualifies for the Go Tri-Valley discount. Full details regarding the Go Tri-Valley program are available at wheelbus.com.

Recent Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD) orders also apply to this service. Only “Essential Travel” is permitted at this time and passengers and drivers are both required to wear approved face coverings. Visit the ACPHD website at apchd.org for additional details on these orders.
